FEMA offers kitchen safety tips for a happy Thanksgiving

During the holiday season, the kitchen is the place where families gather to prepare hardy and delicious meals. It is also the place that can be most dangerous during this joyful time of year.

According to FEMA, cooking equipment like a range or stovetop is the leading cause of reported home fires and home fire injuries in the U.S. During the holidays, the risk only increases.

Below are some cooking safety tips from FEMA that can help you and your loved ones stay safe while cooking this year’s Thanksgiving feast.

Clifton Park bulk waste pick-up to start

Clifton Park has partnered with County Waste to conduct a curbside bulk waste collection starting Sunday, Sept. 11 and continuing for the following three weeks.

The town has been divided into thirds, one for each week of collection. Residents will receive a notice in the mail several days prior to their collection week indicating their pick-up date and describing the items acceptable as bulk waste.

Residents are asked to place bulk items on the curb by 7 p.m. on the Sunday evening of their week. It will take up to seven days to pick up all items. There is no daily schedule by street, so residents are asked to be patient if all or any items are not collected early in the week.

Library prepares for garden swap and sale

The Friends of the Clifton Park-Halfmoon Public Library are calling on local gardeners to join them under the roof outside of the Library on Saturday, June 11 from 10 to 2 p.m. for the "Plant and Garden Goody Swap and Sale."

Swappers can check in plants and garden goodies (unopened seed packets, garden decorations, tools, pots/potting soil, bird feeders, garden related books/magazines, et cetera) as early as 9 a.m., and the Swap and Sale runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

This year the friends will have a mini-book sale of garden related books and magazines in the Board Room adjoining the porch. Books and garden goodies must be clean and in usable condition. Participants are asked to label plants so others will know what they’re getting. Swappers can take home an equivalent value of plants or garden goodies. Plants and goodies can also be purchased.

Balloon causes power outages in Saratoga County

About 1,000 NYSEG customers are without power in Mechanicville and Stillwater, according to employee Jim Salmon.

The outage is being blamed on a mylar balloon. The balloon got stuck in a substation and caused equipment to short out.

Service should be restored around 3 p.m.
