Police: Women cooking meth with kids nearby | News
GREENFIELD - The two are locked up in the Saratoga County Jail for lack of 25-thousand dollars bail.
They are 28-year-old Megan Howell and 34-year-old Marlinea South. According to New York State Police, they live in the trailer at lot number 2 in the North Creek Mobile Village off Plank Road in Greenfield.
And according to the District Attorney, they were making more than dinner Saturday night when police arrived. They were cooking up methamphetamine from a potentially explosive mixture of Sudafed, drain cleaner, and other household chemicals.
"It was an active cook center. It was an active lab. It was highly sophisticated," said District Attorney Jim Murphy. Murphy says this Saratoga County's first known meth lab. He says the women were making the highly addictive drug to sell to others.
And Murphy says the worst part is that they were doing it with children in the trailer with them. An 11-month-old and a a 15-year-old.
"How hard is it to figure out that if these fumes are toxic and you're in a relatively confined space, and your child is only feet away, that this has got to be effecting the health of a 15-year-old and an 11-month old baby," said Murphy. "To me this is not rocket science."
A woman who lives in a trailer next door has four children of her own. She told NewsChannel 13 that she was not happy when she found out what was happening inside her neighbors' trailer.
D.A. Murphy says the removal and disposal of the chemicals from the trailer will cost taxpayers thousands of dollars.
Police also charged the third adult who lives there, Bruce W. Tyler, with endangering the welfare of a child. Prosecutors say it was his 15-year-old in the trailer when the cooking was taking place.
