Schumer says raising interest rate unacceptable

If congress doesn't act, the interest rate for Stafford loans will double from 3.4 percent to 6.8 percent.

New York’s senior senator, Chuck Schumer says that's unacceptable.

Schumer is pushing for legislation extending the 3.4 percent rate for one year and hopes to make it permanent.

A vote on the issue is scheduled in the house on Friday.

Local students to take part in nationwide anti-bullying rally

HUDSON - On Friday, May 4, students in Hudson will join thousands of others across the country to take a stand against bullying.

The Group Stand4Change.org is organizing a rally to bring attention to the problem of bullying.

NY schools can become 'Green Schools'

Local schools can participate in the Department of Environmental Conservation’s (DEC) Green School program.

According to the DEC, schools across New York are making a difference in their communities with programs that help recycle, reduce waste, save energy and conserve resources.

The DEC has outlined benefits of becoming a green school:

  • Prepare students to understand and act on the current and future environmental challenges that face all New Yorkers.
  • Model environmental and conservation best management practices in their building and in landscape design and maintenance can reduce costs.
  • Build partnerships with the local community to design and implement projects and programs that will result in a healthier environment and safer school.

The DEC has dedicated a website that details green schools and what they do.

Citizens Bank seeks student applicants for scholarship program

ALBANY - Applications for the Citizens Bank's TruFit Good Citizen Student Scholarship program are now being accepted.

Last year, the scholarship program awarded a total of $50,000 to college students whose volunteer efforts made a difference in their communities.

This year, 40 scholarships will be awarded to high school seniors and current college students across the country who have been active in community service.

Applicants are asked to write an essay of no more than 250 words or record a 60-second video summing up their responsibility and leadership skills gained through community service experiences.

The scholarships will be awarded this summer for the 2012-2013 academic year.

WHS MasterMinds plays last games of regular season

On Wednesday, March 28 the Watervliet High School MasterMinds team played their last games of the regular season.

They beat Waterford 115-85 and lost to Coxsackie-Athens 190-90.

Deadline for Board of Education seat petitions April 16

Deadline for Board of Education seat petitions April 16

The deadline for petitions for the two Shenendehowa’s Board of Education seats are due April 16.

According to the district’s website, education law requires that a candidate provide a petition signed by at least 122 qualified voters (two percent of the number of residents who voted in the last district election).

Below are specifics from the district’s website:

Candidates may pick up petitions at the district clerk's office at 5 Chelsea Place.  Petitions must be received by the district clerk no later than 4 p.m. on April 16, 2012. To qualify, candidates must be a U.S. citizen, a resident of the district for at least one year prior to the election, and at least 18 years old.

The two candidates with the highest number of votes will serve a three-year term commencing July 1, 2012.
